EX100: Introduction to Research Rocketry
Course Description:
This one day course is designed for the high power rocketry enthusiast who is interested in getting a
overview of the concepts of manufacturing your own rocket motors. You will learn the fundamentals
of small rocket motor manufacturing, safety, materials required, proper equipment, laws and regulations, and
determining if you still need to apply for an LEUP for other items.
We will mix, cast, cut and core a 5 grain 38mm motor and static test it on a stand.
This is not a propellant "design" course.
A copy of a current drivers license, liability waiver and non disclosure agreement
must be signed upon arrival. Open to US citizens only.
Course Materials include:
1. Lecture / Powerpoint presentation
2. Student workbook / manual
3. A 5 grain 38mm 640nS "I" rocket motor hardware from Gorilla Motors.

4. Two 4 foot sections of casting tube and liners and o-rings.
5. Standard propellant starter kit. This is enough to make 6 or 7 38mm I-J motors.
There will be enough base chemicals left over that just buying more oxidizer will
be enough to make 25 pounds more.
6. Publication: "Experimental Composite Propellant" by Dr. Terry McCreary
7. Unlimited "how to" support.
Note: Anyone is eligible to take the class, but you must be a Tripoli Level 2 or higher to
actually fly research rockets at a Tripoli sanctioned Research Launch.
Class Schedule: Send us an e-mail to let us know you are interested in attending. Once we get a minimum of 3 to 5 people, a class will be scheduled around everyone's needs.
Tuition: $295 includes class presentation, rocket motor hardware, Dr. McCreary's book and propellant starter kit.
The cost for all this alone is less than half the cost of 6 Aerotech J350's!
Our first class was a huge success! Pictures and video here.
