I finally got a chance to build one of my kits I offer on my site for myself!  I chose to do a Blue Phenix 4.0 (with some mods, of course!)  I use a full 48 inch for the bottom  airframe so I could use a 28 inch 54mm motor mount for the nasty wicked 54mm L motor!  I did two coats of Cabot's sanding sealer on the bare airframe and sanded with 320 grit using one of those $29.99 palm sanders. (I don't know how I lived without one of those!) Then I did two coats of Rustoleum cobalt metallic blue spray paint in the rattle can.  Man! I usually do such a crappy job on metallic's but this paint went on SO NICE. . The first flight was on a J415W clone to 3600'. Flew so straight and didn't even rotate either.  Can't wait to bump it up to a bigger motor.. I was thinking of making a nice red in the 5 grain 2000nS Loki case.. Nice nose cone from Performance Rocketry too!

I build the fin can as a sub assy first.

First coat of sealer.

Weird how the tube turns emerald color w/ the sanding sealer.. Inside of the tube is bare, outside coated. See the color difference?

Epoxy the crap out of everything..

Don't forget the speednuts and the eyebolt!

I cut the bottom of the fin slots with some tin snips and epoxy the reinforced assy into the airframe.

Fin fillets.. West systems w/ filler.

fini'!

Sand and make perty.

Second coat of sanding sealer (on fins too)

Smooth finish after sanding and paint!

Dumbo ears!

I shoulda done another coat of SS or sanded a bit more as only about half the spirals were gone but had some friends coming in from out of town for the launch, still looks nice!

White fins..

Harold Sasloe and shameless self promotion!

Perfect flight and recovery to 3,600 on a J415 clone!
